Sensible Ways to Exercise Portion Control

By: Mom Index

As busy moms, we often find ourselves eating on the run or serving our family meals that are convenient and devoid of significant nutritional value.  Since we often dine outside of the home or opt for prepared meals or delivery services, it is difficult to monitor our daily food intake, to feel satisfied and to exercise proper portion control.  To resolve this dilemma, we can employ several sensible techniques to better manage our food consumption regardless of whether we are dining at home, at restaurants, at work or at activities with our children.
  • Avoid dining at all you can eat restaurants or buffets
  • Serve your entrées on small plates so you have less room for food
  • Maintain a food log and adjust your intake based on your habits
  • Temper your hunger by eating small meals throughout the day
  • Eat satisfying, healthy foods to avoid snacking shortly after your meals
  • Avoid dining in front of the television or while talking on the phone
  • Prepare meals in advance so you do not snack while cooking
  • Grocery shop on a full stomach so you do not return home and overeat
  • Go out for desserts such as ice cream so you do not overindulge at home
  • Consult with a nutritionist to learn about your body’s needs as well as alternatives for your favorite delicacies
  • Dine at a table so you can account for your food intake
  • With the exception of water, pass on free drink refill offers
  • Purchase premeasured, packaged snacks for work or on-the-go
  • Read label serving sizes to better understand brand specific portions
  • Avoid eating leftovers or snacking from your child’s plate
  • Store to go snacks in small snack size bags as opposed to sandwich size or larger storage bags
  • Share an entrée when dining at a restaurant or request a doggy bag for half your order
  • Avoid overeating by purchasing individual size meals instead of bulk packaged items
  • Eat a light salad prior to your entrée
  • Create a healthy snack drawer at work and separate snacks by day of the week
